Ananias son of Nedebaeus held the high priesthood in these years, a man remembered for greed and violence. Paul's claim to a good conscience strikes him as insolence, and he answers it not with argument but with force, ordering bystanders to strike an untried man across the mouth.
The blow places Paul in his Master's company, for Jesus was struck the same way at His own hearing (John 18:22-23). "The servant is not greater than his lord" (John 15:20).
