What Does Acts 3:18 Mean?
Peter holds two truths in one hand. The people acted in ignorance, and yet nothing slipped outside God's purpose: a suffering Messiah was no emergency measure but the long message of the prophets — the pierced sufferer of the psalms, the wounded Servant of Isaiah (Psalm 22; Isaiah 53).
The cross, then, was not the defeat of God's plan; it was the keeping of God's word. Human wrong was real and answerable, and God's promise ran straight through it to fulfillment — Scripture holds both together, and so does Peter. For the believer this is bedrock: if God kept the hardest promise, that his Christ would suffer, then every gentler promise is safe with him. What he foretells, he fulfills.
