What Does Acts 5:14 Mean?
This verse completes Luke's parenthesis. The awe that ended casual association did not slow the gospel; it adorned it. Luke counts the growth in multitudes and notes plainly that women as well as men were coming to faith in ever greater numbers.
The phrase 'added to the Lord' is exact: converts are joined not to a movement or a roster but to a living Person. As earlier 'the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved' (Acts 2:47), so here he keeps doing the adding. Every true increase of the church is, at bottom, more people belonging to Jesus.
