What Does Acts 9:37 Mean?
The washing was the customary care given the dead. But notice what does not happen: burial, which normally followed swiftly. Laid in the upper chamber instead, with Peter only ten miles away (v. 38), she is mourned by a community that has not quite finished hoping.
Luke states the loss without softening it: the most generous woman in Joppa “was sick, and died.” Goodness exempts no one from mortality; death takes the kind as readily as the cruel, and the church grieves over real graves.
