What Does Amos 5:26 Mean?
Beneath their official worship, Israel had been carrying idols, the shrine of Moloch, the star-image of Chiun, figures of false gods they had crafted with their own hands. Their religion had become a mixture, the Lord's name on their lips while pagan idols traveled with them.
This is the deeper problem behind the rejected worship: divided hearts. Outward devotion to God coexisted with secret allegiance to idols of their own making. Such mixture is no true worship at all. The verse confronts the reader with the danger of a divided heart, of professing faith in God while carrying along other gods, whatever form they take. The Lord desires whole-hearted devotion, not a faith shared with idols we have fashioned for ourselves.
