Amos 7:11 Meaning and Explanation

Amaziah summarizes the offending message for the king: "Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land." He repeats the two hardest words Amos has spoken -- the fall of the dynasty and the exile of the nation. Stripped of context, they sound like pure threat against the crown.

There is a subtle distortion in his report. Amos had said God would rise against the house of Jeroboam; Amaziah sharpens it into a personal prediction of the king's violent death. The priest hears a prophet's burden and relays it as treason. Yet the substance is not false: captivity does lie ahead for a people who will not turn. The tragedy is that Amaziah uses these grave words to discredit the messenger rather than to heed the warning they carry.
