Amos 7:6 Meaning and Explanation

God answers a second time: "This also shall not be." The fire is held back. Twice now the prophet has pleaded, and twice the Lord has stayed His hand. The pattern reveals the patience of God, who keeps giving His people room, keeps responding to the cry of an intercessor, keeps delaying the day of reckoning.

Yet a reader senses that this cannot continue without end. Mercy has been extended again, but the people themselves have not changed; they do not even know how near disaster came. God's willingness to relent is real and gracious, but it is not the same as the people's repentance.
