What Does Amos 8:13 Mean?
The famine touches those least expected to fall: "In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst." These are the strong and the beautiful, the very ones in the fullness of life and vigor. If even they grow faint, then none are exempt; the deprivation reaches the heartiest among the people.
The thirst here echoes the famine of the previous verses -- a thirst not only of the body but of the soul deprived of God's word. The youthful strength that seemed inexhaustible cannot supply what is missing. Vitality is no defense against a hunger this deep. The picture is of a whole generation, full of promise, brought low by the absence of the one thing that truly sustains.
