Amos 8:7 Meaning and Explanation

God answers their schemes with an oath: "The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works." Every rigged scale, every poor man sold for sandals, every bag of swept-up refuse -- none of it is lost on Him. What the powerful did in the confidence that no one was watching is held in perfect remembrance.

This is a sobering and a comforting truth at once. To the oppressor it is a warning: the deeds done against the helpless are not forgotten and will be answered. To the oppressed it is hope: their suffering is seen, their loss recorded, their cause held in the memory of God. The poor who had no advocate in the marketplace have the surest advocate in heaven. Nothing done in the dark escapes the One who remembers all.
