What Does Amos 9:14 Mean?
God promises to reverse the exile: "I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel." Those who were scattered will be gathered home. The waste cities, left in ruins by judgment, will be rebuilt and inhabited; vineyards will be planted and their wine enjoyed; gardens will be made and their fruit eaten. The whole pattern of loss is undone.
Each restored blessing answers an earlier word of judgment. Those who built houses and did not dwell in them, who planted and did not harvest, will now build and dwell, plant and eat. The labor that was once cut off by calamity will at last be enjoyed in peace. This is the gracious heart of God revealed at the book's close -- not content merely to spare a remnant, but to plant them again in plenty, restoring what sin had forfeited and giving them rest in the goodness of their own land.
