Paul's aim is that they would live worthily of the Lord, pleasing him in everything, fruitful in good works and growing in the knowledge of God.

What Does Colossians 1:10 Mean?

This verse states the purpose of the prayer in verse 9. Knowledge of God's will is not meant to stay in the head; Paul wants it to issue in a whole manner of life that honors the Lord.

The picture is of a life that bears weight in the right direction -- to walk worthy, to be fruitful in every good work, to keep increasing in the knowledge of God. Doing and knowing feed each other: obedience deepens understanding, and understanding fuels obedience, in a widening circle of growth. Paul refuses to separate sound belief from godly living. A faith that pleases the Lord shows itself in conduct that pleases him, in real good done to real people. He prays not for spiritual experiences alone but for lives that visibly bear the fruit of knowing God.
