What Does Colossians 2:3 Mean?
This brief verse completes the thought of verse 2. Paul declares that in Christ -- and nowhere else -- are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Every true treasure of understanding is stored in him.
The word hid does not mean kept secret from believers but stored up, deposited safely in Christ for those who seek him. This directly answers the false teachers who promised hidden wisdom apart from the gospel. Paul says the only place such treasures exist is in Christ, and they are not all -- every last one. A church tempted to look beyond Jesus for some deeper insight is told the search ends in him. To know Christ is to have access to the full storehouse of wisdom. There is no higher knowledge waiting elsewhere, no treasure that bypasses the Lord himself.
