What Does Daniel 1:20 Mean?

Whatever the king asks, in every matter of wisdom and understanding, he finds these four ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers in his kingdom. Babylon's finest experts, trained in its arts, cannot match the four young men whose wisdom came from God.

The contrast is deliberate. The wisdom of the world, with all its prestige, is far outshone by the understanding the Lord gives His servants. This is not arrogance on their part but the plain result of God's hand upon them. The same theme will return when Daniel alone can interpret dreams that baffle every wise man in Babylon. Where God grants wisdom, it surpasses every counterfeit. He is glorified when His servants are found faithful and full of understanding before a watching court.
