What Does Daniel 11:37 Mean?
His self-exaltation severs every other tie. He regards neither the God of his ancestors, nor 'the desire of women' (whatever others most cherish or revere), nor any god at all, for he magnifies himself above them all. Devotion, affection, reverence, he sweeps them aside in service of his own glory.
Pride at its extreme leaves no room for love or worship of anything beyond the self. The man who honors no god and cherishes nothing has made an idol of himself, the loneliest and most barren of idolatries. Scripture shows where such a path ends; the heart that exalts itself above all eventually finds itself with nothing and no one. Only the soul that bows before God is free to love rightly and to be filled.
