What Does Daniel 11:42 Mean?

The king extends his power over country after country, and now even Egypt, the great southern kingdom, 'the land of Egypt shall not escape.' The nation that had so long been a rival pole of power falls under his hand. His conquest seems, for the moment, nearly complete.

The fall of mighty Egypt under the conqueror's hand marks the apparent zenith of his success. Yet the careful reader knows the pattern of this chapter: the highest point of human pride stands nearest its downfall. Empires that 'stretch forth the hand' to grasp everything are, in Scripture, always reaching toward the moment of their own undoing. The hand that grasps the world cannot hold off the end that God has fixed.
