What Does Daniel 11:44 Mean?

At the very height of his power, alarming news arrives 'out of the east and out of the north', tidings that trouble him deeply. Enraged, he sets out in great fury to destroy and to annihilate vast numbers. The conqueror who feared nothing is now stirred by reports he cannot control, and his answer is yet more violence.

It is telling that the unstoppable king is finally rattled, not by a greater army in front of him, but by rumor from beyond his sight. The proud are more fragile than they appear; what they cannot dominate, they fear, and fear drives them to fresh cruelty. Yet his fury is the thrashing of one whose end is near. The God who governs the east and the north is closing the appointed account, and no rage can reopen it.
