What Does Daniel 12:13 Mean?
The book closes with a tender personal word to Daniel himself. He is sent on his way to live out his remaining days, with the promise that he will 'rest', a gentle name for death, and then 'stand in thy lot at the end of the days.' His own place in the resurrection is assured.
After a lifetime of faithful service in exile, Daniel is given the deepest assurance: rest now, and a sure standing in the life to come. His 'lot' is his appointed inheritance, kept for him by the God he served. This is the hope held out to every faithful soul, that beyond labor and death lies rest, and beyond rest a rising to receive what God has prepared. Daniel may go his way in peace, and so may all who, like him, entrust their portion to the Lord of the end of days.
