What Does Daniel 8:4 Mean?
The ram pushes outward in three directions, and no creature can withstand it or rescue another from its power. This pictures the conquests of the Medo-Persian empire as it spread its dominion across the ancient world. 'He did according to his will' describes a ruler answerable, in his own eyes, to no one.
Yet the very words that crown the ram also expose its limit. To act according to one's own will, with no power able to deliver, is to stand for a moment where only God truly stands forever. The reader who knows the rest of the vision already senses the warning: the ram that no beast could resist will itself be struck down. Human greatness, however sweeping, is borrowed and brief.
