What Does Ephesians 2:12 Mean?
Paul piles up the losses of the old life: 'without Christ,' 'aliens' from God's people, 'strangers from the covenants of promise.' To stand outside the covenant was to stand outside the promises, far from the place where God had pledged Himself.
The summary is desolate: 'having no hope, and without God in the world.' A life apart from God is finally a hopeless one, however busy or comfortable it appears. Paul names this bleakness honestly so that the 'but now' of the next verse may shine. The far country is real, but it is no longer home.
