What Does Esther 9:13 Mean?
Esther asks for two things, both with reason. First, that the Jews in Shushan be permitted a second day to act according to the decree, for the danger in the volatile capital had not been spent in one day. She speaks as one who knows the city still holds those who would rise against her people.
Second, she asks that Haman’s ten sons, already fallen, be hanged upon the gallows. The public display would announce, beyond any doubt, that the house of the enemy had ended. The same gallows Haman built for Mordecai now bears his sons, the instrument of intended murder turned into the sign of its undoing.
