What Does Esther 9:6 Mean?
The narrator turns to Shushan the palace, the heart of the empire and the place where Haman had so nearly triumphed. Here, in the very citadel from which the decree of death went out, five hundred men who rose against the Jews are overcome.
The number is reported soberly, a count rather than a celebration. Shushan had been the stage for Haman’s plot, the gallows, and the king’s feasts; now it becomes the measure of how completely the danger has turned. The danger that began at the center is answered at the center.
