The list now reaches the singers and the gatekeepers, those who led the music of worship and those who guarded the temple doors. One singer, Eliashib, is named, along with three porters: Shallum, Telem, and Uri. With these the record of the temple servants is rounded out, from priests down through every supporting office.

Even those whose service was song and watchfulness were not outside the reform. The singer who lifted praise and the gatekeeper who guarded the holy place were called to the same purity of devotion they helped others approach. It is a searching reminder that nearness to worship is no substitute for a faithful heart. Yet here too the door of repentance stood open. Every servant of God's house, whatever his task, is summoned to let his own life match the holiness of the One he serves.
