What Does Galatians 4:25 Mean?
Paul completes the correspondence. Hagar stands for Mount Sinai and for the Jerusalem of his day — the system centered on law-keeping. That Jerusalem, he says, is in bondage together with her children, however proud her heritage.
It is a sobering identification. To cling to the law as the ground of acceptance is to belong to this enslaved Jerusalem. The very people who boasted in the law were, in this sense, in bondage. Paul wants the Galatians to see clearly which family the troublers would have them join.
