What Does Galatians 4:29 Mean?
Paul recalls that Ishmael, born after the flesh, mocked and troubled Isaac, the child of promise. The pattern repeats, he says, in the present: those who rest in human effort oppose those who live by the Spirit and promise.
The Galatians should not be surprised, then, that the children of promise face hostility. It has always been so. The opposition they meet from the troublers is an old story playing out again. Yet the outcome of that old story, as the next verse shows, favors the child of promise.
