Genesis 39 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Joseph is far from home as a servant in Egypt. Things go wrong unfairly — but one thing stays true the whole time: God is with Joseph.

Today's Story

After his brothers sold him, Joseph was brought to Egypt and became a servant in the house of an important man named Potiphar.

Joseph worked hard and did everything well, because God was with him. Potiphar noticed and trusted Joseph with his whole house. Everything Joseph touched seemed to go well — because the Lord was with him.

But then something unfair happened. Joseph was blamed for something he didn't do, even though he had stayed faithful and done what was right. And he was thrown into prison for it.

It wasn't fair at all. Joseph hadn't done anything wrong. Anyone would have felt crushed.

But even in that dark prison, the Bible says it again: the Lord was with Joseph. God made the prison keeper kind to him, and soon Joseph was put in charge of all the other prisoners. Whatever Joseph did, God made it go well.

Joseph's life kept getting harder and more unfair. But God never, ever left him — not in the palace, not in the prison, not for one single moment.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Even when Joseph was treated unfairly, “the Lord was with him.” When something feels unfair to you, how does it help to know God is with you?
  2. Joseph kept doing his best and staying faithful, even as a servant and even in prison. Why is it good to do our best even when no one seems to notice?
  3. Joseph went from a fine house to a prison, but God was with him in both. Is there a hard place you're in where you can remember God is with you?
