What Does Hebrews 9:22 Mean?
The writer draws the principle to its sharp conclusion. Under the law, almost everything is cleansed by blood; and then the weighty summary: without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Cleansing and pardon, in God's appointed order, come at the cost of life poured out. This is the logic that runs through the whole sacrificial system.
The statement is solemn but not despairing, for it explains why the cross was necessary and why it is such good news. If forgiveness requires the shedding of blood, then the blood of Christ, freely given, is the ground of our pardon.
