What Does Hosea 2:19 Mean?
The whole chapter rises to this vow. Three times God says 'I will betroth thee unto me,' the language of a fresh engagement -- as though the past unfaithfulness were wiped clean and the relationship begun anew. And this betrothal is 'for ever,' founded on righteousness, justice, steadfast love, and tender mercy.
Astonishingly, God woos back the very people who betrayed Him, and binds Himself to them with no end. The dowry He brings is His own character -- His faithfulness, not theirs, secures the bond. This everlasting betrothal anticipates the union of Christ and His people, the Bridegroom who gives Himself wholly and forever to a bride He makes pure by His own love.
