What Does Hosea 9:12 Mean?
Hosea continues the sorrowful picture begun in the verse before. Even if the people manage to raise their children to maturity, those children will be taken, until none are left. Then comes the sharpest line of all: woe to them when God himself departs. The loss of the children is grievous, but the loss of God's presence is the true desolation.
Here the prophet names what makes any judgment unbearable: not the absence of blessings, but the absence of the One who blesses. To be left by God is the heart of woe, and no earthly gain can fill the place his presence leaves empty. This is why his promise never to leave nor forsake his own is such good news.
