Context
Satyrs were demons or wild spirits in ancient Near Eastern thought. Their presence here suggests not only desolation but also the proximity of chaos and the demonic.
What Does Isaiah 34:14 Mean?
Desert creatures and island creatures meet in the ruins, a convergence of all wild things, all that is untamed and far from human order. Satyrs call to one another, their cries echoing through empty places. Screech owls find rest where once there were beds and roofs, where once there were walls. The wasteland becomes home to all that thrives in desolation, chaos, and darkness. The sound is not the hum of human life but the cries of creatures that shun the light.
Yet in Matthew's gospel, Jesus casts demons into the Gadarene swine and brings healing. His authority extends over all creatures, over all chaos, over all that threatens order and peace. Where chaos roams free in judgment, in His kingdom peace reigns forever.
Application
The wages of sin is desolation and alienation from all good order. Yet in Christ, we are brought from the wilderness into the Father's house, from loneliness into community, from chaos into peace.
