Isaiah 34:4

And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

The heavens themselves dissolve and roll up like a scroll; all the host of heaven falls like withering leaves.

Context

This apocalyptic vision appears elsewhere in Isaiah and in the New Testament; it describes the final cosmic upheaval at the end of all ages.

What Does Isaiah 34:4 Mean?

The dissolution of heaven is among Scripture's most haunting images. The heavens, which declare the glory of God and seem eternal, are rolled up like a scroll and put away. The host of heaven, all the stars and celestial bodies, fall as easily as leaves from a vine or figs from a tree. Nothing in creation is exempt; all things that seemed immovable shake and fail. This is the end of the present order, the complete transformation of all things.

When Jesus rises, He declares that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will not pass away. He alone is eternal, the only permanence in a universe of change. In Him we find what cannot be shaken, what cannot fall or fail.

Application

We live in a cosmos destined for renewal and transformation. This should free us from clinging to earthly security and draw us toward the One who is eternal and unchanging.
