Context
Zion, the city of David and seat of God's throne, had been attacked, mocked, and desecrated. This judgment restores what was taken and vindicates God's people.
What Does Isaiah 34:8 Mean?
The day of the Lord's vengeance is not cruel spite but righteous recompense. Edom had mocked and joined in the desolation of Jerusalem; now the ledger is balanced. The controversy of Zion, all the wrongs against God's city and God's people, is settled. Justice is not delayed indefinitely but comes in its appointed time, and it is thorough.
Jesus spoke of another day, a day of judgment when He would separate the sheep from the goats and judge all nations. Yet He also rose as Victor, transforming the day of His execution into the day of His vindication. Those who trust in Him face not judgment but mercy, for He has already borne the verdict we deserve.
Application
God does not forget the wrongs done to His people. He is patient, but His justice is sure. We can trust His judgment to be fair and complete.
