Context
This prophecy will be fulfilled in Isaiah 37:36-39 when a plague strikes the Assyrian camp and Sennacherib flees to Nineveh, where he is later assassinated.
What Does Isaiah 37:7 Mean?
God's word through Isaiah is specific and stunning. 'I will send a blast' speaks of a divine action that operates outside the military calculus that Assyria understands. The blast may be plague, may be rumor of unrest, may be the stirring of neighboring powers. But it is God's hand, not chance. The rumor will draw Sennacherib away from Jerusalem, back toward Assyria.
Then comes the weight of the promise: he will fall by the sword in his own land. Not as a conqueror returning home victorious, but as a man cut down in the place he thought was safe. God does not just spare Jerusalem. He overthrows the blasphemer completely.
In the Original Language
blast (רוח, ruach) -- literally 'wind' or 'spirit,' often used of divine breath or the hidden force of God's action
Application
God does not merely defend His people. He actively overthrows those who rise against His name and His truth. We can trust that evil will not have the final word.
