God completes the picture: Israel will rejoice as enemies are winnowed away like chaff.

Context

Completion of the image of Israel's transformation: enemies are scattered, and Israel celebrates God's deliverance.

What Does Isaiah 41:16 Mean?

The threshing is complete. Now Israel fans the chaff—tosses it in the air. A strong wind carries it away. A whirlwind scatters it completely. And Israel's response is joy. Not grim satisfaction at enemies' defeat, but rejoicing in the LORD. The glory belongs not to Israel's strength or cunning, but to 'the Holy One of Israel.'

This is how God desires victory to taste: not as conquest, but as liberation. Israel goes from slavery to rejoicing. The enemies are not slaughtered but scattered like worthless chaff. And in that deliverance, Israel sees the holiness of God made manifest.

In the Original Language

zarah (Holy One)—the awesome, separate character of God, calling Israel's joy into a higher plane of worship rather than mere triumph.

Application

When God acts on your behalf, receive it as a call to worship, not a warrant for pride. Joy in deliverance is joy in God's holiness revealed. That is a joy that lasts, because it is not built on comparing yourself to enemies but on beholding God.
