God surveys all the counselors and wise men of the nations and finds none capable of understanding or advising on what is to come.

Context

This continues the contrast between God's knowledge and power versus the utter helplessness of human powers and their idols. It prepares the ground for God's next assertion of His singular authority.

What Does Isaiah 41:28 Mean?

God looks about at all the counselors, the advisers to kings, the wise men of the nations. When He asks them, when He questions them about what they see or what they know of what is coming, not one can answer. The silence is absolute. They have no words of wisdom, no insight, no counsel to offer. This is not contempt but simple fact. The wisest men of the earth, apart from God's revelation, cannot understand His purposes or see the future.

This is deeply humbling for those of us who pride ourselves on our understanding or our ability to figure things out. God is telling us that without His word, without His revelation, all our wisdom falls short. The counselors of the nations are left mute before Him.

In the Original Language

edom (Hebrew), 'counsel' or 'purpose' -- implies the inner reasoning or strategy of a plan; without it, no one can speak effectively.

Application

When we feel lost and unsure, seeking counsel from every direction, we may be seeking from those who ultimately have no word to give. God invites us to bring our confusion to Him, for He alone understands and can counsel us truly.
