Isaiah 44:13

Isaiah 44:13

The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

The carpenter uses tools and skill to carefully craft an idol in human form, intending it to be a permanent fixture of the home.

Context

A second craftsman, the carpenter, is now portrayed with similar precision and care. The careful measuring and shaping stand in contrast to the futility of the work. The idol is made after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man—it is made in imitation of the image-maker.

What Does Isaiah 44:13 Mean?

The carpenter brings his full skill to bear. Rule, line, plane, compass—all the tools of his craft are employed. He measures carefully, marks precisely, shapes beautifully. The idol is made in the image of humanity, embellished with human beauty, intended to endure as a permanent member of the household. There is almost admiration here for the craftsmanship, yet the satire is complete. All this care, all this skill, all this attention to making something beautiful and lasting—poured into making a god that is no god.

The shaping of the idol after the figure of a man is significant. The idol is made in our image, not we in God's image. We are creating in the wrong direction. To make an idol is to shrink the infinite down to the size of our own making, to fashion a god limited by human craft and beauty. That it may remain in the house is the saddest detail—this is to be your constant companion, your god. But a god of wood, however beautiful, cannot walk with you, cannot speak truth, cannot save.

In the Original Language

tzelem (צלם), figure or image -- literally, a shadow or form; the same word used in Genesis 1:27 for humanity made in God's image

Application

Do not try to reshape God to your preferences. Surrender to His image and allow Him to reshape you.
