The Lord commands the removal of obstacles so His people can return home on a clear path.

Context

An echo of Isaiah 40:3-4, describing the preparation for a new exodus: the way must be cleared, the path made straight, so that the redeemed can travel home.

What Does Isaiah 57:14 Mean?

This is the language of preparation, of clearing a road through wilderness. 'Cast ye up, cast ye up' (build, raise up a causeway across swampland or rough terrain). 'Prepare the way' (make the path straight and passable). 'Take up the stumblingblock' (remove the obstacles that would trip the travelers). This is what the Lord does for His repentant people. The path home is not automatically clear. There are obstacles, internal obstacles (habits, fears, shame), external obstacles (enemies, distance, scarcity). But God prepares the way. This is His work. We repent; He removes the stumbling blocks. We turn; He opens the door. The parallel to Isaiah 40, where a voice cries 'Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God,' suggests that this preparation is both for the people's journey to God and for God's journey to His people. They meet on a cleared path.

After judgment comes restoration. This is the pattern. Israel has been told how far it has fallen, how futile its works, how scattered its false hopes. But now it is told: there is a way back. And it is not a way you have to carve yourself. The Lord prepares it. Every obstacle is removed. The stumbling blocks are taken up. This is grace: the way that was blocked is made open. For us, the stumbling blocks might be the secrets we hide, the shame we carry, the self-doubt we nurse. But the way is prepared. We need only walk it.

Application

When we are ready to return to God, we should know that He has already begun preparing the way. We do not have to clear it ourselves. We only need to respond and walk. The obstacles that seem so large are being removed by God's hand.
