Context
This verse marks the culmination of the judgment section, stating the consequences for those who have repeatedly refused God's call throughout history.
What Does Isaiah 65:12 Mean?
To be numbered to the sword is to be counted among the slain. The judgment is comprehensive: ye shall all bow down to the slaughter. The reason is stated with terrible clarity: when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear. God had given them every opportunity. His arms were spread out all day. His word came through prophets, through the established covenant, through the conscience each person bears. They had no excuse.
Yet the language carries weight: they did choose that wherein I delighted not. God speaks not in rage but in sorrow. His delight is in righteousness, in mercy, in humble walking with Him. They chose the opposite. This is not arbitrary punishment; it is the inevitable consequence of turning from the source of life toward that which cannot sustain. In the Gospel, the offer remains open: turn back, and live. But there is also judgment for those who refuse. The cross itself is the hinge point where this verse's warning meets this verse's only answer.
In the Original Language
numbered (מנה, menah) -- to count, assign, or appoint; the verb suggests that their fate has been determined by their own choices.
Application
When God calls, answer. The persistence of His voice is a mercy, not an annoyance. To ignore it is to choose judgment.
