Isaiah 65:23 Meaning and Explanation

To labor in vain is one of the deepest afflictions of the fallen world. A farmer works hard and drought destroys the crop. A mother bears a child who then dies in infancy or turns to destruction. An artist creates beauty that is dismissed or ruined. Isaiah promises that in the new creation, the person works knowing that their labor will not be squandered, will not be stolen or erased or reduced to nothing. The phrase 'bring forth for trouble' moves beyond work to childbearing, the deepest creative act of human beings. To bear children 'for trouble' is to birth them into a world where suffering is nearly certain. But in the redeemed age, a woman will bring forth children into a world where they will flourish, where the future is not a threat but a gift.

The ground of this promise is profound: 'they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.' The redeemed are not merely individuals blessed by God, but they are themselves a crop, a harvest that God has cultivated and claims as his own. Their children inherit not just the world that has been renewed, but the status of being 'seed of the blessed,' bearing in their own existence the mark of divine favor. This suggests that blessing is not something earned by each generation anew, but flows generationally, that we can speak of families, peoples, lineages that carry God's favor across time. A mother or father in the redeemed world knows that their child is born into a lineage of blessing.
