Jeremiah 2:8

Jeremiah 2:8

The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

Religious leaders across all ranks, priests and prophets alike, have ceased to seek the Lord and have turned toward idolatry and false gods.

Context

By Jeremiah's time (late 7th century BC), the priesthood had become formal and sometimes syncretistic, blending Yahwism with Canaanite practice. False prophets thrived, speaking what people wanted to hear.

What Does Jeremiah 2:8 Mean?

The indictment now names the shepherds: priests, keepers of the law, pastors of the people. These are not ordinary believers but those whose entire calling is to maintain covenant knowledge. Yet 'they that handle the law knew me not', a devastating claim. To handle the Torah and not know the God whose word it is represents a profound spiritual death. The priests did not even ask 'Where is the LORD?', they had become so habituated to their roles that they conducted ritual without relationship.

The corruption deepens: the prophets, who should speak for God, 'prophesied by Baal', the Canaanite fertility god whose worship promised abundance but delivered only emptiness. The 'things that do not profit' echoes verse 5's vocabulary of vanity. Leaders who should have guarded the people against idolatry instead led them into it. This is perhaps the saddest indictment: corruption at the head spreads throughout the body.

In the Original Language

yadah (ידע), 'knew' -- in biblical covenant language, 'knowing' God means intimate, binding relationship, not mere intellectual awareness

Application

When leaders, in church, family, society, cease to seek the Lord, their authority becomes empty machinery. Their example teaches the people to do likewise. Spiritual renewal must begin with those who teach, modeling what it means to 'know' God in covenant obedience.
