Jeremiah 5:31 Meaning and Explanation

The final indictment completes the picture of comprehensive corruption. 'The prophets prophesy falsely' reverses the ministry that should guide the people—instead of speaking God's truth, prophets deceive. 'The priests bear rule by their means' shows that religious authority has been captured and corrupted. Yet the most damning phrase is 'my people love to have it so.' The people are not passive victims but willing participants in the corruption. They prefer comfortable lies to hard truths. They support false prophets who tell them what they want to hear.

The closing question—'what will ye do in the end thereof?'—is not merely rhetorical but an appeal. The people have created a system of lies, corruption, and false assurance. They have surrounded themselves with false prophets who comfort them with false security. But this system has an end. When judgment comes, what will they do then? Will they finally turn back to God?
