Job 15:32 Meaning and Explanation

Eliphaz returns to the image of a tree. The wicked man's end will be accomplished before his time, his life paid out fully while still young, and his branch will never grow green. He is cut off prematurely, denied the long, fruitful flourishing he sought.

A branch that never turns green is a picture of barrenness, of life that fails to reach its harvest. Eliphaz means that godless living ends in just such withering, and there is a real warning here about lives that wither at the root. Yet to apply it to Job, whose suffering is not punishment, distorts the truth. The verse leaves us longing not for green branches secured by our own merit but for the lasting fruitfulness that comes from being rooted in God, who makes even the planting of the faithful endure.
