What Does Job 15:34 Mean?
Eliphaz broadens his verdict from the individual to the whole company of the godless. The assembly of the hypocrites, the empty and profane, will be left desolate, and fire will consume the tents of those built up by bribery. Corruption and false piety, he says, end in barrenness and flame.
The pairing of hypocrisy and bribery names two real corruptions, the hollow show of religion and the buying of unjust gain, both of which Scripture condemns. There is truth that what is gathered through deceit and bribery cannot stand before God. Yet Eliphaz darkly numbers Job among such company, which is a grave wrong. The verse calls us to integrity over hollow show, and to honesty over corrupt gain, while warning us never to consign a suffering brother to the tents we think deserve the fire.
