Job 18:13 Meaning and Explanation

Bildad describes a wasting sickness that eats away the body, devouring 'the strength of his skin.' He gives it a chilling name: 'the firstborn of death,' the deadliest of death's own offspring, the fiercest disease that brings a man to the grave. The language is meant to make Job, covered in his own painful sores, shudder.

There is real cruelty in this verse aimed at a man already afflicted in his flesh. Bildad turns Job's disease into evidence against him. Yet the gospel meets us precisely here, in bodies that waste and fail. Christ bore our sicknesses and carried our sorrows, and He has promised a resurrection in which this perishable will put on the imperishable. Death, even its fiercest firstborn, is not the end for those who are His.
