What Does Job 19:10 Mean?
Job heaps image upon image of ruin. He is broken on every side, gone as good as dead, and his hope has been uprooted like a tree pulled out of the ground. A felled tree pictures finality, what is torn up by the roots does not grow again on its own.
Yet even here a quiet promise lingers beneath the grief. Earlier in this book Job spoke of a tree that, though cut down, sprouts again at the scent of water. The God who uproots is also able to plant, and the One who seems to remove all hope will become the very ground of Job's hope before the chapter closes. Despair is not the last word for those who belong to the living God.
