What Does Job 19:16 Mean?
The reversal is complete. Job, once a great man whose word commanded a household, now calls his servant and receives no answer. He must entreat, beg with his own mouth, the very one who owes him service. Authority has collapsed into helplessness.
Suffering can strip away every prop of status until a person stands utterly low. Job's humiliation, the master made suppliant, anticipates the descent of Christ, who took the form of a servant and was disregarded by those he came to save. There is dignity even in this lowering, for the path of humility is the path God himself walked, and it leads at last to exaltation.
