Continuing to describe his sense of divine opposition, Job pictures a fenced road and a darkened path. Every direction is blocked; every step is shadowed. He feels hemmed in, unable to find a way out of his suffering or a light to guide him through it.
Seasons come when the path ahead seems sealed and the way forward lost in gloom. Job's honesty gives words to that experience. Yet Scripture promises a day when God leads the blind by a way they knew not and makes darkness light before them. The Lord who set darkness in Job's path is also the One who is himself the light, and he has not finished leading his servant home.
