What Does Job 20:21 Mean?
Zophar pictures total consumption. Nothing is left of the man’s “meat,” his abundance; he has devoured everything and left no margin. Because nothing remains, no one looks for his prosperity to continue or to pass on. His estate simply ends.
The image of leaving “none” behind is the dark mirror of generosity. The greedy man consumes all and bequeaths nothing, while the good man, Scripture says, leaves an inheritance even to his children’s children. A life poured out only on appetite finally has nothing to give. The verse invites us to live so that something of lasting good remains when we are gone.
