What Does Job 24:7 Mean?
Job presses the image of deprivation to its extreme. The poor are made to lie down naked, without clothing, having no covering against the night's cold. A cloak in that world was a man's blanket as well as his coat, and the Law forbade keeping a poor man's garment overnight for this very reason.
To leave a person shivering and exposed is to strip away the last dignity of the body. Job grieves that such things are done and seem to go unpunished. Yet the God who clothed the first man and woman has not forgotten the cold and bare. Jesus taught that to clothe the naked is to clothe Him, and He counts every act of mercy and every act of neglect. The unsheltered are never outside His sight.
