What Does Job 29:4 Mean?
Job looks back to his flourishing years, when the secret, the close counsel and friendship of God, dwelt upon his tent. The tabernacle here is simply his home, the place where his family and his fellowship with God were gathered.
To have the secret of God upon one's house is to live in trusted intimacy with him, like a friend let in on private counsel. Job grieves the loss of that closeness most of all. Yet the gospel holds out exactly such friendship as a gift: those who walk with God are no longer called servants but friends.
