What Does Job 3:11 Mean?
Job now shifts from cursing to questioning. Why did I not die at birth, he asks, why did I not breathe my last the moment I came into the world? It is the first of a series of why questions that will press against the silence of heaven through much of his lament. He longs for the rest he imagines death would have given him.
These are the questions of a heart that can no longer make sense of its own survival. Job does not get an immediate answer, and Scripture lets the question hang. Yet the believer knows that life and breath are gifts held by God, who has numbered our days for reasons beyond our sight. In Christ, even the grave is not the final word, for He has passed through death and opened a hope that reaches further than Job could yet see.
